1 Begin your break in the hilly state of Meghalaya by arriving in Shillong. This quaint

town has sights worth seeing such as the Cathedral, the golf links and Ward’s Lake.

2 Set off for the Umiam Lake, a vast and scenic lake that lies on the route from Shillong to

Guwahati. Here you can enjoy an array of water sports, such as riding a waterbus or

gliding gently in a paddle boat. Nehru Park, a botanical garden, is located near the water

complex at Umiam Lake. To get away from the crowds at the Water Complex, head to the

Ri Kynjai resort, which affords a splendid view of the lake. You can also have lunch here.

3 Explore Laitumkrah in Shillong, an area lined with shops and restaurants. Here you’ll

also find small Jadoh stalls, where you can try Khasi food. Look out for shops selling

authentic Jaintia food as well.

4 Travel to Upper Shillong to see the picturesque hills and pine woods. Stop at Shillong

Peak and take in a panoramic view of the city. The three-step Elephant Falls are also a

sight well worth seeing.

5 Go to Cherrapunjee, also known as Sohra, known for its record-breaking annual

rainfall. It’s a place of grassy landscapes, sheer cliffs, waterfalls and limestone caves.

From Cherrapunjee visit also Mawllynnong village, now famous as the cleanest village in

India.

6 Take a day trip to Mawphlang Sacred Forest in the Khasi Hills. It’s only a short drive

from Shillong, and is where you’ll see a profusion of orchids, butterflies and other

flowering plants. It is a sacred grove, surrounded by grassland on all sides, preserved by

the locals over centuries. There are also ancient megaliths at the edge of this forest.

7 Enjoy adventures in the West Garo Hills. Tura is the cultural and administrative centre

of the Garo tribes. From here you can take in the popular attractions such as Balpakram,

Nokrek and Siju Cave. It’s also scattered with streams and lovely waterfalls such as

Rongbangdare, Pelgadare, and Gandrak Falls.
